Fujitsu gets Nordstrom contract

Fujitsu Transaction Solutions, a division of the Japanese electronics giant, said Monday that it has signed an agreement with Nordstrom under which Fujitsu will replace the point-of-sale (POS) systems at all 132 Nordstrom stores in the United States with its Team POS 2000 systems. Although Fujitsu is not a major brand in the United States when it comes to generic desktops, the company has carved out niche markets; It is one of the larger names in pen-tablets in the commercial market. The TeamPoS 2000, the computer Nordstrom will install, is effectively a Windows 2000 computer specially configured to be used as a kiosk or as a terminal for managing store operations.

ProClarity gets $7.75 million

ProClarity announced Monday that it closed a $7.75 million funding round. Summit Partners led the round and received a seat on the Boise, Idaho-based company's board of directors. The company raised its $2 million first round in March 2000 when it was named Knosys. ProClarity makes analytics software, which analyzes business data, and will use the financing to continue its growth and global expansion strategies. The company's customers include AT&T, Allstate, CompUSA, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, Nordstrom, Pennzoil QuakerState and the Veterans Health Administration.

Short Take: Nordstrom.com to offer gift registry

Nordstrom and gift retailer The Wedding List announced today an exclusive agreement to offer gift registry services through Nordstrom.com and in select stores, marking the department store chain's first foray into wedding and gift services. Through the deal, the companies will launch a cobranded site in the second quarter of this year. Customers of the site will be able to register for and buy gifts both online and off. New York-based The Wedding List offers gifts from more than 200 manufacturers. Nordstrom, based in Seattle, is making a $1.5 million investment in The Wedding List.

Nordstrom.com today announced its first-ever national advertising campaign to introduce what it calls the "world's biggest shoe store," Nordstromshoes.com. The ad campaign, dubbed "Make room for shoes," will run through a variety of mediums including TV, print, and outdoor advertisements beginning November 1. Nordstrom.com--an Internet subsidiary of Nordstrom--is spending $15 million on its advertising in the fourth quarter of 1999. Nordstrom.com launched in October 1998.

Vocus closes $13.4 million round

Vocus said Tuesday it closed its $13.4 million second round of funding. The Lanham, Md.-based company has raised a total of $15.4 million and received nearly a 500 percent increase in valuation, CFO Stephen Vintz said. Lazard Technology Partners led the round and Sterling Venture Partners also participated, along with several previous investors. Vocus develops automation software for the public relations industry, which performs functions such as gathering articles from clipping services and storing them, to sending out copies of press releases in bulk e-mails. Public relations employees at Arthur Andersen, Southwest Airlines, Allstate Insurance and Nordstrom are among those using its software. See complete list.
