Short Take: Apple sells ARM shares

Apple Computer has sold 2 million shares in ARM Holdings, a U.K. designer of microprocessors and related software, for 36 million pounds ($59 million), cutting its stake to 7.2 million shares. The shares represent 4.11 percent of ARM. Apple still holds 14.8 percent of ARM, worth 131 million pounds ($215 million) at market close. ARM began operations in November 1990 as a venture between Apple and the U.K.'s Acorn Computers.

Short Take: Novell updates NetWare

Network software provider Novell refreshed an older version of its NetWare operating system, adding tools to facilitate migration to its just-released new version. NetWare 4.2 replaces current 4.11 and IntraNetWare versions of the operating system and includes support for IP, the latest version of Novell Directory Services, desktop management tools, and a variety of additional software also included in the NetWare 5.0 release. The NetWare 4.2 upgrade will be available before the end of the year.

Short Take: Novell to ship new clustering software

Networking software provider Novell announced its intentions to ship new clustering software by the end of this month. The Novell High Availability Server for NetWare, priced at $3,895, is targeted at users of the NetWare 4.11 operating system, with support for the soon-to-be-released NetWare 5.0 upgrade coming shortly, according to the company. The software allows two servers to act as an "active" cluster in a two-machine fail-over setting, meaning both computers can handle a task while providing a secondary option if one fails.

Short Take: Seagate releases recovery tool for NetWare

Seagate Software announced a new storage management Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option for Novell NetWare networks. The tool, an add-on for Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare or Microsoft Windows NT, can recover a server and reintegrate it into a Novell Directory Services (NDS) network infrastructure. The new tool is available for $495 and is designed for use with NetWare 3.12, 4.1, or IntranetWare 4.11 releases.
