Digital camera sales growing

U.S. retail sales of digital cameras and digital video camcorders showed a solid increase for the first quarter of 2002, according to a report released Thursday by research firm NPDTechworld. A total of 1.23 million still cameras and 215,000 camcorders were sold during the period, compared with 958,000 and 202,000 in the same period a year ago. NPD attributed the growth partly to falling prices. The average selling price for a still camera last quarter was $385, compared with $425 a year ago, while the average price of a camcorder dropped to $710 from $803.
