Photos: Concept and show cars
At the annual Western Automotive Journalists Media Days event, we got up close and personal with a set of concept cars from GM. Along with the Holden Efijy and the Chevy Camaro convertible, there were show cars based on the Chevy HHR and the Pontiac Solstice.
Built on the Corvette platform, GM built the Efijy concept under its Australian brand, Holden. This car takes the 1950s styling already in use in the Chevy HHR and exaggerates it with this dramatic coupe.
The deep engine well holds a shiny supercharged 6-liter V-8. The cars LED headlights are cooled by fans.
The 1950s look continues inside the car. Its Australian roots are apparent from the right-hand drive configuration. It also has a touch-screen LCD in the stack.
GM also had this concept, based on the Chevy HHR, on display. This concept does away with the rear doors, using the rear space for cargo. The side mirrors are simple, mounted off a ball joint, and aren't power adjustable. We were also baffled by the lack of door handles.
The interior of this concept gets a little more modern than its 1950s look would suggest. The head unit is a big double DIN stereo with navigation and multimedia capabilities.
GM jumps on the retro-muscle car bandwagon with its new Camaro. The company had the convertible version, which is entering production soon, on display.
The designers went for a very clean interior, and a big, industrial-looking shift knob. The speedometer and tachometer in this concept use a cone shape. The numbers look oddly stretched from the passenger seat but perfectly normal to the driver.
The designers explored a very clean design with the stereo interface, mimicking an iPod. The stereo doesn't play CDs, instead relying on an iPod, MP3 player, or USB key loaded with digital tracks.
GM brought this SEMA show car out for Media Days. It's a Chevy HHR with the same supercharger used in the Chevy Cobalt SS.
Also among the show cars was this Pontiac Solstice, seen here driving around a cone course.
