Photos: 2009 Jaguar XF

Following the unveiling of the bold and brawny Jaguar C-XF concept at this year's Detroit auto show, Jaguar has taken the wraps off the production version of its next midsize sedan, the 2009 XF. While the XF retains some of the design language from the concept, including the coupe-like roof line and the strafed hood, the sedan's exterior styling has been toned down for production. Inside, the Jaguar XF features a bevy of advanced technology, including a pop-up rotary shift knob, proximity sensing lights, and a host of media and information options.

Other tech highlights on the XF include Bluetooth hands-free calling, a blind spot monitor, front and rear parking aids, and adaptive cruise control. All XF models come standard with an eight-speaker audio system, while a 440-watt Bowers and Wilkins-branded premium audio system is available on the top trim levels.

The 2009 Jaguar XF sedan will be the first new model from Jaguar since the launch of its XK coupe. Like the XK, the XF was designed by Ian Callum, who was also responsible for designing the Aston Martin DB7.

With its small mesh intake grille and tapering hood, the Jaguar XF has a distinctive "face," although the production XF loses the aggressive slanted headlamps of the C-XF concept. The XF features Jaguar's new Pedestrian Contact Sensing System, which is designed to lessen the impact of a pedestrian collision by firing actuators that deploy the hood, providing a "cushioned space" to mitigate injury.

The 2009 XF forgoes Jaguar's signature J-gate shifter arrangement in favor of a pop-up rotary shift control called the JaguarDrive Selector. According to Jaguar, the new interface "combines precise, intuitive control with space-saving packaging." The Selector rises out of the central console when the driver presses the engine start button.

In the cabin, the 2009 XF features an impressive array of information and entertainment tech. Its in-dash touch screen LCD display can be used to program the onboard navigation system and to control iPod tracks via an optional full-speed connection.

The XF's air-conditioning vents, located on each side of the LCD screen, remain closed until the engine is turned on, at which point they rotate to the open position.

From the rear, the XF has a wide rear track, which, in addition to giving the car an aggressive stance, provides the XF with best-in-class rear-seat width. The rear profile is accentuated by wrap-around LED taillights and a horizontal chrome "blade" bearing the Jaguar insignia.

The 2009 Jaguar XK will come with a choice of four engine configurations: a 2.7-liter V-6 twin-turbocharged diesel; a 3.0-liter gasoline V-6; a 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8; and a 4.2-liter supercharged V-8. The model will be offered with three trim levels: Luxury, Premium Luxury, and SV8.

The XF gets a coupe-like roof line and has the same windshield rake angle as the XK. Its high, rising belt line follows the current trend among auto designers for wedge-shaped models with a forward-leaning stance. Like the Jaguar XK, the XF has power vents to the rear of the car's front fenders.

The C-XF, which was introduced at this year's North American International Auto Show, provided the inspiration and much of the DNA for the production version of the Jaguar XF.
