Photos: 2007 Detroit Auto Show preview

Detroit didn't get its reputation as America's most important auto show without reason. We already have advance information on many new concepts and models that automakers will put onto the show floor. Here are just a few.

In this concept, debuting at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz chops the top off of its flagship S600 sedan to see what a convertible would look like. With the renewed popularity of convertibles, there's a good chance this car will see production.

This concept is based on the next generation of the Lancer Evo, launching in 2007. It represents a four-door, all-wheel-drive performance sedan. With Mitsubishi pushing its proven rally technology from the Evo series into other models, the Prototype-X could be a winner.

Following in the footsteps of sister company Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler explores its own design for a four-door coupe with the Nassau. This concept has the best model name we've seen for a while.

Mazda refines the Nagare concept it showed off at the Los Angeles Auto Show with the Ryuga, which takes the new design direction a step further. Mazda's press release states that the Ryuga uses "rich fabrics," so we might actually get to see the inside of this one.

Volvo explores crossover territory with the XC60, an SUV-like car smaller than the XC90. The instrument cluster and center stack supposedly use the design of an iPod for inspiration, a pretty smart move considering the success of the source.

Could this be the new NSX? Acura claims this concept represents a future exotic sports car. It has similar design cues to the Advanced Sedan Concept that Acura showed off at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but fortunately it doesn't look as ugly.
