Lexus GS 450h shows refined, yet conservative, design (pictures)
Lexus takes few risks with the 2014 GS 450h, offering a comfortable luxury car with excellent fuel economy, but not much engagement for drivers.
Lexus' GS models slot in just below the larger LS sedan. The GS 450h version comes with a hybrid drivetrain, giving it more power and better fuel economy than the non-hybrid GS 350 model.
Although sporting aggressive grille elements, Lexus maintains a high roofline on the GS 450h to make cabin access easy and comfortable.
The GS 450h comes standard with an adaptive suspension which lends to a very nice, competent ride.
Lexus fits the GS 450h with LED running lights. Full LED headlights, not shown here, are available as an option.
Large windows allow good visibility all around.
Lexus keeps the placement of the hybrid badges subtle.
The hybrid drivetrain produces a combined 338 horsepower, while achieving average fuel economy in the low 30s.
Front power adjustable seats come with three memory settings.
The rear seat is designed for two, but can fit three in a pinch.
Lexus uses bamboo trim in the GS 450h, a nod to sustainable natural materials.
The driver dial offers four modes: standard, Eco, Sport, and Sport Plus.
In Eco and standard drive modes, the instrument cluster shows a power gauge on the left.
In Sport and Sport Plus modes, the instrument cluster shows a tachometer.
The Remote Touch controller is a good concept, but difficult to use precisely.
The home screen on the large, 12.3 inch LCD includes icons for all major car functions.
Maps in the navigation system only show in top-down, plan view.
The Info screen includes an Apps icon, which leads to Lexus' Enform app integration.
With iOS devices or USB drives, you can use voice command to request specific albums or artists.
