Genesis enters a New York (Concept) state of mind (pictures)

The New York Concept is the first genuine piece of metal to emerge solely from Hyundai's luxury offshoot, Genesis.

Cars are Andrew's jam, as is strawberry. After spending years as a regular ol' car fanatic, he started working his way through the echelons of the automotive industry, starting out as social-media director of a small European-focused garage outside of Chicago. From there, he moved to the editorial side, penning several written features in Total 911 Magazine before becoming a full-time auto writer, first for a local Chicago outlet and then for CNET Cars.

Well, what have we here?

There it is!

This is the New York Concept.

It's the first concept from Genesis, Hyundai's luxury offshoot.

There are two other Genesis cars at the moment, but they're updated or carryover models from the Hyundai days.

In fact, this is the first "true" Genesis vehicle, even though it'll never reach production in this form.

It's not just a sporty looking car, it's also a hybrid!

It's packing a two-liter, direct-injected engine mated to electric motors -- or maybe just one, Genesis didn't say.

Net output is 241 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.

The car utilizes an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Eight-speeds are kind of a sweet spot between performance and efficiency.

While it is a bit thrifty in the fuel department, this car packs some very sporty looks.

The lines underneath the headlights allow air to flow into and through the wheel wells.

The six-sided grille that first found popularity on the Genesis G80 (formerly Hyundai Genesis) once again appears here.

Those super-thin headlights are quite fetching.

In fact, the whole front end is quite the attractive affair.

Do you like grilles? You'd better, if you're interested in this thing.

Thanks to new technologies, headlights are no longer relegated to giant square shapes.

The car's long hood is another visual element that belies sportiness.

The jury is out on whether or not this car was called New York solely because it debuted in New York.

The wheels are awfully aggressive, fitting perfectly into their wells.

These gill-like vents behind the wheels are easily the most polarizing part of the exterior.

Slim side-view mirrors are part and parcel with 21st-century concept cars.

Why yes, that is a light-up emblem inside the seat.

That gargantuan screen measures 21 inches.

Instead of being a five-seater, this car will carry no more than four.

It wouldn't be a concept car without a positively ludicrous steering wheel.

The center console splits up both rows, just like a Porsche Panamera or Aston Martin Rapide.

The seats are pretty plush-looking.

The rear end's a little on the boring side, to be honest.

Slim taillights are nice, and reminiscent of the G80, but the whole thing is just a little too rounded to be straight sporty.
