The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider brings some sporty vigor to Los Angeles

The Fiat 124 Spider is the spiritual successor to the original Spider, which debuted nearly half a century ago.

The Spider is powered by a 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

The Spider will be available with both six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions, but the manual is only available on the cheaper trim level.

Under its skin, the 124 Spider sports double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension setups.

The Spider's front headlights are a distinct throwback to the original model, with updated features like LED running lights.

Fiat left no stone unturned when transforming the Mazda MX-5 into the 124 Spider. The two cars share zero body panels.

A manual soft top is the only roof style available for this roadster.

To keep road noise at bay, the 124 Spider utilizes special acoustic front glass.

The 124 Spider's taillights are -- dare we say it -- a little Viper-like.

If you opt for the Bose audio package, you'll get speakers built into the headrests so top-down driving doesn't drown out the stereo.

If the sound coming from the Fiat 500 Abarth is any marker, the 124 Spider should sound positively glorious at full wail.

Fiat's new Spider features a number of safety technologies, including blind-spot monitoring, adaptive front headlights and a rear backup camera.

The 124 Spider's interior borrows a number of cues from the Mazda MX-5, but Fiat made sure to upgrade a good deal of materials, including the dashboard topper and the seats.

The 124 Spider will be offered in six colors when it launches -- red, white, black, gray, dark gray and bronze. The higher-end Lusso trim will also come in white pearl.

The first 124 (cute, right?) Spiders to leave the assembly line will be special-edition models with bright blue paint and light brown leather interior appointments.

The 124 Spider borrows Mazda's 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. There's also a redundant knob that contains all the same functionality, if you don't like leaving fingerprints all over your screen.

The special-edition 124 will also come with Fiat-branded wearables, as well as a poster.

The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider will arrive in US showrooms next summer. Pricing and market-availability information has not yet been announced.
