Audi E-Tron Sportback First Edition is one slick electric SUV
This loaded-up limited-edition EV is one of just 200 coming to the US.
A dramatic tapering rear window gives the E-Tron Sportback its own visual character without losing much cabin or cargo space.
The E-Tron Sportback is a five-seat, all-electric SUV powered by two motors delivering 355 horsepower (402 hp in Boost Mode). Torque is quoted at 414 pound-feet (490 in Boost Mode).
Powered by a 95-kWh battery, Audi says the E-Tron Sportback hits 60 mph in 5.5 seconds en route to a top speed of 124 mph. Range is a solid -- if unremarkable -- 218 miles. Each E-Tron comes with 1,000 kWh of complimentary charging through the Electrify America network.
The Sportback's cabin is typical modern Audi, which is to say tech-rich, comfortable and well built.
This First Edition model is one of 200 bound for the US and features model-exclusive Monaco Gray Valcona leather upholstery.
The E-Tron Sportback can be equipped to tow 4,000 pounds, enough for a small camper or a trailer with a couple of big motorcycles or jet-skis.
With standard multi-mode air suspension and a near 50:50 weight distribution, the Sportback enjoys a great ride and handling balance.
Matrix LED headlamps feature five different arrival and departure animation light-show sequences, but only beginning with the 2021 model year. These lights are also capable of a ton of other interesting active safety features, most of which are disabled because of US lighting regulations. Bummer.
This loaded, top-shelf E-Tron Sportback Edition One starts at a heady $89,540 (including $1,045 for delivery). However, for the 2021 model year, a new entry-level Premium trim starts at $70,145 (delivery included). All E-Tron models qualify for a full $7,500 federal tax credit, too.
Much of the Sportback grille area is blocked off for improved aerodynamics. This model has a 0.28 coefficient of drag, 0.02 better than its more conventional E-Tron sibling.
The E-Tron features a discreet motorized charge port doors located ahead of the front door.
While one charge port is standard on the base model, two ports -- one on each front fender -- are a nice touch on upper level models.
The Audi E-Tron Sportback is built in Brussels, Belgium.
The E-Tron Sportback features a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. The battery pack is covered under a separate 8-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Base Sportbacks get lane-departure warning and forward collision with autobrake (including cyclist and pedestrian detection). Adaptive cruise control assist with active lane assist is available on higher trims.
The E-Tron Sportback has earned an Insurance Institute For Highway Safety Top Safety Pick Plus rating, arguably the toughest-to-achieve safety rating in the business.
That sloping roofline only takes a smidge of rear-seat headroom and cargo space.
