Volvo XC40 R-Design has black exterior accents and lava on the floor

In addition to traditional buying and leasing methods, Volvo will offer the XC40 via the Care by Volvo subscription service.

If you want to get your XC40 via subscription, which includes maintenance and insurance, it's $600 per month for a Momentum, or $700 per month for an R-Design like this test car.

All XC40 models are powered by a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is all-wheel drive.

The XC40 is a subcompact premium SUV, and competes with the Audi Q3, Infiniti QX30 and Mercedes-Benz GLA250.

The "Thor's Hammer" headlights carry over from other Volvo models, but have a more upright, chunkier shape.

With the rear seats folded, there's 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

The R-Design model gets LED headlamps.

This cute little Swedish flag is a really cool touch, and we're told it might only be fitted to the first run of US-spec XC40 models.
