Volvo's latest WTCC safety car is one wonderful wagon
What better way to highlight both sportiness and safety at the same time?
Station wagons make popular safety cars. They're big enough to carry both human cargo and tons of safety equipment, and with the right engine under the hood, they're just as capable as a performance sedan. Volvo, one brand that's never truly abandoned the station wagon, is rolling out a new safety car based on one of its most capable wagons ever, the V60 Polestar.
The V60 Polestar is the base for Volvo's latest safety vehicle, which will be used during this year's FIA World Touring Car Championship series, and which lasts 12 races and kicks off April 1 in France. The V60 Polestar uses a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, good for 345 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
Of course, the car isn't any good at its new job without loads of specialized equipment. Volvo's equipped it with a roll cage for increased on-track safety, as well as heaps of rescue and communications equipment that are part and parcel with any FIA-approved safety car.
And it wouldn't be a Polestar vehicle without its ubiquitous blue paint, which is present and accounted for on the WTCC safety car. You'll get your first chance to check this wagon out on April 1, at France's Circuit Paul Ricard (or on television, since not everybody lives in France).
