This latest version of the app has a new home screen icon, but the changes are not just cosmetic. You'll now be able to create a new blog from within the app instead of just editing existing ones. You also be able to post videos more quickly by just adding the video's URL and letting the app do the rest.
You can submit to blogs that accept submissions. If you follow a cooking blog that accepts food photos, for example, you can now do it from the app.
To keep up with the latest happenings on Tumblr, you can just use Notifications. Just add "Trending on Tumblr" from the edit screen and you'll be able to swipe down from the top of your iPhone to see the latest things trending on Tumblr without opening the app.
One last tweak makes it easy to discover new content. You can search posts by post type to find all the posts with the same subject. That means if you like bicycles, for example, you can search for bicycles to see all the posts with that content. It's a great addition that helps you get the topics that interest you, so you can follow just the posters you like.
No easy style adjustments
One thing that still hasn't been addressed in this version is there still isn't an easy way to add style to your text. To make bold subtitles or use other common style formats, you still have to enter HTML tags. Blog posts often have simple formatting to make the different sections pop so it just seems like that's a feature that should be added to the interface.
The updated Tumblr app looks and works great, requires fewer taps to navigate, and it's easy to discover new people to follow. The ability to start a new blog from within the app is a welcome change, bringing almost all the features of Tumblr to your smartphone.
With that said, it still doesn't let you format your posts without tinkering with HTML. It's serviceable, but it seems like it ought to be easier.
It's important to note that if you don't use Tumblr, there is little point in downloading the app. But if you're fan of microblogging or want to get involved, the app is a great way to follow others and post your own content.
