Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 review: Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

To measure the OS's performance, CNET Labs ran a series of tests on both Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. Both operating systems were running on a Toshiba Satellite R15 with a 1.6GHz Pentium M 725 processor; 512MB of 333MHz RAM; and a 4,200rpm hard drive with 60GB of storage.

Boot times
We time how long it takes to completely load the OS and start-up apps (each system has the same start-up apps installed) from Shutdown.

Adobe Photoshop CS
Using our own custom Action file, we time how long it takes for Adobe Photoshop CS to execute the Action file on a collection of 15 JPEG and TIFF files, ranging in size from 1.83MB to 49.2MB. During the script, the files are subjected to several filters, such as Unsharpen Mask and High Pass, as well as various color and lighting effects.

iTunes MP3 conversion
Using iTunes version 4.7.1.30, we time how long it takes to rip 19 audio tracks to 192Kbps MP3 files.

Support for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 lasts for as long as you own the product, but Microsoft requires you and the hardware vendor to troubleshoot problems before troubling the Microsoft help desk. The OS has only a rudimentary troubleshooting guide built in, but there's a wealth of resources online, including public newsgroups, chat rooms, FAQs, and downloads of updates. Unfortunately, Tablet PC Edition 2005 isn't listed on the Web page for operating system support, and the site lacks a dedicated Product Solution Center for it. While you can always e-mail the company with a problem, phone support is available only 8 a.m. to midnight on weekdays or 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends ET. When we called the support line on a weekday, we waited nearly five minutes to talk to a technician. As with XP, support for the first two incidents is free, but you'll pay for the long-distance call; after that the calls are toll-free but cost $35 each.
