It's almost superfluous to talk about performance in this system, since no one in his or her right mind should buy the TouchSmart 310z for digital media manipulation or general productivity. It's faster than Sony's abysmal Vaio J114FX--we'll give HP that--but otherwise, if you're serious about finding an all-in-one for day-to-day home productivity, you can find many faster options for the same price or less. Credit the HP's quad-core AMD chip for this PC's fast multithreaded application performance in Cinebench. We welcome fast performance in any PC, but for a general-purpose desktop like this one, we'd much rather have well-rounded speed than the situational boost you'll find here.

HP has also taken a spare route with the TouchSmart 310z's connectivity options. You get USB 2.0 jacks on the left side and the back panel. You also get a handful of analog audio jacks for headphones, a microphone, and speakers, as well as a single digital audio out. The sound quality from the system itself is loud enough to fill up a room, which isn't that common in all-in-ones, but it also loses clarity at higher volumes. Audio purists will definitely want to make use of one of the speaker outputs.

Other ports on the TouchSmart 310z comprise a TV tuner input, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and an SD Card slot. FireWire, eSATA, HDMI in, and any kind of video output are all absent. Again, this speaks to the 310z's value proposition. It's reasonable at the $699 starting price, and laughable as the price climbs past $900.

The TouchSmart 310z consumes a reasonable amount of power given its specs. We might like to see it come in closer to the Sony than the Acer, given the Acer's larger screen and generally faster performance, but the difference amounts only to about $4 a year in extra charges, and whether you measure in dollars or kilowatt hours, that's not much.

HP includes a standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty with the TouchSmart 310z. You also get 24-7 toll-free phone support and a variety of support resources available on HP's Web site, as well as on the system itself.
