The HP G62-225DX uses a standard 6-cell battery but lasted a mere 2 hours 14 minutes on CNET Labs' demanding video playback battery drain test. That's a dismal showing, putting it dead last among this budget group of retail back-to-school laptops. The Asus K501J-BNC5 and the Toshiba Satellite C665-S5049 each use a 6-cell battery and ran for more than three hours on the same test. During regular use in the course of writing this review--hopping between Word and Excel, watching HD trailers on Apple's site, and listening to podcasts--the laptop ran a bit longer, but still failed to top the 3-hour mark.

HP backs the G62-225DX with an industry-standard, one-year warranty. Toll-free telephone support is available 24-7 during your warranty period, and the HP support Web site includes real-time chat with a technical support representative. If you want to troubleshoot problems yourself, you can search through the site's FAQ database. We generally don't recommend third-party extended service plans for budget systems; they're too expensive given the cost of the laptop itself.
