Fujifilm X-A1 camera: The X-M1, but cheaper

Fujifilm continues to float its X Series cameras downstream, chopping specs as they drift. For the new X-A1 interchangeable-lens camera, what's gone is the X-Trans sensor, the primary highlight of its more expensive sibling the X-M1. It also has a cheaper, single-color finish -- all-black or all-blue. In all other respects, it's pretty much the same as the X-M1. That said, the sensor and the stylish two-tone bodies are really what makes the X-M1, so I'm not quite sure what the attractions of the A1 are relative to the competition.

Here are some selected alternatives:

Fujifilm

There are a lot of options at $600 and based on past experience, I'm not sure Fujifilm's traditional sensors can match Sony's or even Samsung's quality. However, it will be an interesting experiment to compare the X-A1 and the X-M1; since the two cameras have the same EXR II processor and lens, we'll actually be able to compare apples-to-apples on the image quality.

Fujifilm also adds another lens to its stable, the XC50-230mm fF4.5-6.7 OIS. This type of slow, telephoto zoom is typical of a third-alternative kit-quality lens offering (after a 55-200mm) that typically shows up in dual-lens bundles. It's scheduled to ship in November for $399.95.

Don't Miss
