Up close with Lenovo's prototype Windows 8 tablet (pictures)

At the Computex computer show in Taiwan, CNET Australia's Craig Simms gets a closer look at Lenovo's prototype ThinkPad tablet running Windows 8.

Craig was sucked into the endless vortex of tech at an early age, only to be spat back out babbling things like "phase-locked-loop crystal oscillators!". Mostly this receives a pat on the head from the listener, followed closely by a question about what laptop they should buy.

Intel was mostly showing off ultrabooks and Thunderbolt solutions, but it did have one stand featuring Asus and Lenovo Windows 8 tablets. Wait...Lenovo? While the Intel representatives wouldn't allow us to hold the unannounced device or talk about in-depth specs, we were able to pry out some information.

A few bits of tape and a non-working home button marked this out as a clear prototype.

Here you can see the 9.7mm (0.38-inch) profile with a docking connector and micro-HDMI port on the base.

The tablet runs on Intel's Clover Trail Atom processor, although the Intel staff would not be drawn on any further specs. While the Clover Trail platform supports cellular, the ThinkPad only had Wi-Fi.

A 3.5mm audio jack, volume rocker and unspecified button are on the right. It's quite possibly the power button, or maybe a dedicated camera button.

The rear features an 8MP camera and a flash.
