Typing on the new BlackBerry Q10 (pictures)

At the BlackBerry 10 launch event in New York, CNET goes hands-on with the new BlackBerry Q10 keyboard handset.

Kent was a senior managing editor at CNET News. A veteran of CNET since 2003, he reviewed the first iPhone and worked in both the London and San Francisco offices. When not working, he's planning his next vacation, walking his dog or watching planes land at the airport (yes, really).

Welcome to the new Q10

Unlike the new Z10, which has just a touch screen, the new Q10 sports the keyboard that made BlackBerry famous. The BlackBerry 10 OS is new, of course, but the Q10's hardware isn't very different from BlackBerry's previous phones. Here you can see the icon-based main menu.

Tap-tap away

The physical QWERTY keyboard has four rows of buttons. Numbers share space with letters and symbols.

Multitasking

On the "Active Frame" page, you'll see up to eight thumbnails of the apps you're currently using. Tap the thumbnail to open the app or click the "X" in the lower-right corner to close the app.

Rock it

On the Q10's right side is a thin silver volume rocker.

Its best side

The Q10 has a trim profile. The charger port is on the left spine.

Around back

The Q10's back cover has a textured surface. The camera lens and flash are in the top-left corner.

And on the Q10's bottom end are the microphone and speaker for hands-free calls and media.
