Wait for it
There's yet to be any significant infrastructure for delivering hydrogen to drivers, but Toyota is pushing ahead with its fuel-cell car.
Come 2015, Toyota is due to release a fuel-cell car that looks like this — or, at least, very much like it.
Running on thin air
The fuel cell takes hydrogen stored in an on-board tank, and combines it with atmospheric oxygen to produce electricity for a motor and water vapour.
Compressed
The hydrogen is stored in a tank at 70MPa, or around 690 times atmospheric pressure at sea level.
Long distance
Range on a single tank of hydrogen is claimed to be around 700km.
Rent or buy?
Toyota has yet to say whether the car will be released for sale, or just for an evaluation lease, like the Honda FCX Clarity.
Four up
Despite being about the same size as a Camry, the FCV-R only has seating for four.
