Take a Field Trip (pictures)
Google's newest app, Field Trip for Android, wants to be your official guide to what's cool and interesting around you. We take a close look at this tool for local discovery.
Categories
With seven different color-coded categories, Field Trip has most of the cool stuff covered. Also, we love the journal-style visual design of the app.
Info card
The beautifully designed cards show you pictures, snippets of copy, and locations. Plus, there are extra controls along the bottom for voting up, voting down, and sharing.
Notifications on full blast
Before you get started, be sure to set your notifications level. Locals might find the "Explore" setting annoying, while curious travelers might think it's neat.
Way too many cards
While it may look cool, as you can see here, the map view can be overwhelming. And with no onscreen key explaining the colors, it can be downright unusable.
Calibrate your notifications
Field Trip lets you dive into specific categories and toggle your subscriptions to specific publications.
Navigation at your fingertips
Right from any info card, you can hit the map to see the specified location. You can even turn on navigation from within the Field Trip app.
Publications settings
Don't like all those notifications about architectural landmarks nearby? You can easily dial down the notifications from architecture-specific publications or unsubscribe completely.
