Don't mess with the Torque

The tough-as-nails Kyocera Torque from Sprint blends durability with modernity by satisfying military specs for ruggedness and retaining smartphone functionality.

Sizing it up

The Torque measures 4.44 inches tall and 2.38 inches wide. Its 4-inch IPS touch screen is made out of Corning Gorilla Glass 2.0 and it has a 800x480-pixel resolution.

Hearing you loud and clear

At the bottom of the device are dual speakers. From my brief time with the handset, I can report that these speakers are indeed very loud.

Push-to-talk... or something else

The handset is 0.56 inch thick, and it features Sprint's Direct Connect push-to-talk button on its left side. If you don't want that service, you can program the button to launch something else, say the camera, instead.

Care for a dip?

The device can be dunked in up to a meter of water for 30 minutes, and is shock-, dust-, and salt-fog-resistant.

A smartphone identity

Powering it is a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a 2,500mAh battery. It runs Android 4.0 ICS and can connect to Sprint's 4G LTE network.

Extreme photo-taking

On the back is a 5-megapixel camera, which includes a handful of photo options like panoramic and HDR shooting, macro zoom, face detection, and burst shot mode. The front houses a 1.3-megapixel camera.

A little perspective

Though it isn't the sleekest device, the Torque (center) isn't that much bulkier than an iPhone sporting an Otterbox (left) or LifeProof (right) case.
