Subaru booth at the 2009 SEMA Show

CNET Car Tech takes a tour of Subaru's booth at the 2009 SEMA Show.

Antuan Goodwin
Antuan Goodwin gained his automotive knowledge the old fashioned way, by turning wrenches in a driveway and picking up speeding tickets. From drivetrain tech and electrification to car audio installs and cabin tech, if it's on wheels, Antuan is knowledgeable.

Subaru at SEMA

Fans of boxer engines and all-wheel drive should look no further. Subaru's booth at the 2009 SEMA Show is home to a few wild WRXs, a pair of tricked out Legacies, and a few surprises as well.

Tread adapters

As if Subaru's legendary all-wheel drive system didn't offer enough grip, these track adapters greatly increase the amount of available traction.

DC Shoes TRAX STI

This one-off TRAX STI was built by DC Shoes driver Ken Block and has a Mattracks rubber track conversion. Under the hood breathes a 400-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged and intercooled boxer-4 engine.

400-horse open sleigh

The TRAX STI pulls a custom built sleigh with four heated Recaro seats, a snowboard rack, and steel skis. The sleigh also features an marine audio system by Alpine and Kicker.

Tall boy

The TRAX STI sits pretty high off of the ground. In addition to the significant height offered by the track conversion, the STI's suspension has been dropped by 3-inches to accommodate the conversion.

Subaru road racing team STI

On the milder side of things, this STI was built to compete in the 2010 Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge. It features an overhauled engine and suspension, but it retains the stock STI transmission and brakes.

Gymkhana 2 STI

Longtime readers of the Car Tech Blog know that we're fans of Ken Block's sick Gymkhana videos. Here we have the actual Gymkhana 2 STI. We touched it when no one was looking.

Complete custom

Essentially, every part of Block's STI has been modified by Crawford Performance, including the engine that has been bored out to 2.7-liters. A quartet of painted Volk TE37 19-inch wheels, my personal favorite, finish this custom package.

VIP-style Legacy

Photos don't really do justice to this customized Legacy's paint job. At least, ours don't.

Interior

This Legacy is customized in the Japanese VIP style and has neat features such as curtains, high quality leather trim, and a subtle body kit lowered over big wheels.

Air suspension

The VIP Legacy owes its low stance to an air suspension system, which can be raised for driving and lowered for styling.

Wireless keyboard

A wireless keyboard interfaces with a car PC hidden somewhere in the interior.

Showtime!

Out back, the Legacy's subwoofers, amplifiers, and compressors for the air suspension are all on display.

SPT Impreza STI

One of the mildest vehicles in the Subaru booth, the SPT Impreza STI features the complete line of Subaru's SPT accessories.

SPT accessories

Out back, the SPT Impreza is also a rolling showcase of SPT accessories, displaying pedal covers, shift knobs, and suspension components in a glass case in its hatchback.

Subaru/Coyote go-kart

Nope, we don't get it either.

1969 Subaru 360 van

This old-school Subaru 360 van was tucked in the back of Subaru's booth. It's remarkable how small vans once were.

Fast parts, slow delivery

This particular van belongs to Subaru of Las Vegas' SPT department and is used (occasionally, we hope) for deliveries.

Legacy wagon

Subaru has always had a great selection of wagons in its lineup. This Legacy wagon has been modified for a more aggressive appearance and improved performance.
