Still good? Keep tabs with the Quirky Egg Minder (pictures)

A closer look at the Quirky Egg Minder.

Katie is a writer, a humor blogger, a Vietnam War historian, and an avid cook. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and is hard at work on her first novel. When she's not writing about tech, she's reading about armored cavalry units in Vietnam, or teaching her labradoodle, Lola, to overcome her lack of opposable thumbs.

The Quirky Egg Minder is an egg tray that keeps track of how fresh your eggs are and sends you notifications when they expire or when you need to buy more.

From the Quirky team: "The Egg Minder gives each egg placed into the tray a time stamp. This time stamp is used to determine the age of the egg. Expiration varies and so in the app itself, you are able to set thresholds on when the eggs should report as 'bad.' We compare the time stamp of when the egg was placed in to today's date to determine the egg's age, and if it's past the fresh threshold it'll be reported as a bad egg."

The Egg Minder holds 14 eggs, giving you enough wiggle room to fit a new dozen eggs plus the two left from the last carton. The Egg Minder will keep track of which eggs are old and new so that you're never left guessing.

The Egg Minder tracks egg freshness based on traditional estimates, which state that eggs are good for between three and five weeks. The default setting is four weeks, meaning that four weeks after you place an egg in the cup, Egg Minder will tell you that it is expired. You can adjust this freshness period to meet your comfort zone, from two to eight weeks.

The app also allows you to customize how many days before expiration you want to be notified and also how many eggs gone will trigger the notification.

The landing page displays a blue ring around the oldest egg (i.e., the egg you should use first). You can click on any egg in the tray, however, to see what the expiration date is. In addition, when an egg is expired, a red ring will appear around the egg in the app, notifying you that you should remove the corresponding egg from the tray and dispose of it.
