SEMA 2008: Chevrolet Camaro Keynote

The Chevrolet Camaro was unveiled over a year ago, yet it's still not on showroom floors. With the Camaro being named the official vehicle of the 2008 SEMA Show, what can GM do to make us pay attention to its interpretation of the muscle car? Unveil a slew of special editions, that's what.

Chevrolet Camaro Black Edition

The Chevrolet Camaro was unveiled over a year ago, yet it's still not on showroom floors. With the Camaro being named the official vehicle of the 2008 SEMA Show, what can GM do to make us pay attention to its interpretation of the muscle car? Unveil a slew of special editions, that's what.

This sinister looking concept is called the Black Edition and the name of the game is stealth. Black chrome 21-inch wheels, black paint, color-matched black badges and dark tint are contrasted by a matte finished hood and rear spoilers and red-glowing HID headlamp halo rings. Under the hood is the production 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 300 horsepower.

The cabin of the 2010 Camaro Black Edition is as dark and sinister as the exterior, with black leather, dark finish HVAC controls and a contrasting red pinstripe. Chevrolet Camaro LS7 Concept

This red-hot Camaro started life as an SS-model. Chevy's engineers yanked the stock 6.2-liter V-8 and replaced it with 7-liter V-8 (you know, the one from the Corvette Z06), outputting 586 horsepower and 545 foot-pounds of torque. Thus the Camaro LS7 Concept was born, capable of 0-60 sprints in a claimed 3.5 seconds thanks to a Tremec 6060 six-speed manual with a GM Performance Parts Hurst shifter. Sick!

The Camaro's engineers wouldn't just drop an insane engine under the hood and leave the rest of the vehicle unmodded. A custom exhaust and intake make sure the LS7 breaths fire with as little restriction as possible. Four wheel Brembo brakes bring the beast to a stop at the end of the drag strip, while a lowered ride height and upgraded suspension keep it flat in the turns. Custom 20-inch wheels make sure that you'll look good at low speed and a custom driveshaft look keeps you safe if the torque proves to be too much for the chassis.

Chevrolet Camaro LS7 Concept (interior)

With the Camaro LS7 Concept being a purely performance focused vehicle, Chevrolet decided to keep the interior spartan. The base level interior trim reduces weight, but touches such as the color matched dash stripe show that the vehicle you're sitting in is something special. With as much power on tap as the LS7 offers, we're sure a subwoofer or two could be tucked in the trunk without too much of a speed penalty!

Chevrolet Camaro GS Race Prototype

Modeled after the iconic blue-and-yellow Camaro of Trans-Am racer Mark Donohue the Camaro GS Race Prototype is no mere concept. It's a full blown race-prototype that has already logged many on-track hours. With a fully-adjustable suspension and extensive chassis reinforcement, the GS Race Prototype was built to meet the specifications of the 2009 Grand Am Koni Challenge GS racing class, and features the stock LS3 V-8 engine outputting 400 horsepower (though the solid motor mounts probably make for a much rougher ride).

We're not even going to bother showing you the interior, it's just a jumble of roll-cage bars in a completely stripped cabin. There's only one seat, the important one. Carbon fiber hood, trunk lid, doors and fenders also keep weight down.

Camaro Dale Earnhart Jr. Concept

American muscle and NASCAR go together like Las Vegas casinos and poor judgement. With that in mind, Chevy tapped NASCAR driver Dale Earhart, Jr. to create a Special Edition bearing his namesake. The Camaro Dale Earnhart Jr. Concept begins life as an SS-model and retains its 6.2-liter V-8. The gears are changed with an upgraded Hurst short-throw shifter. The stock Brembo brake package is still in place, but wrapped around them are custom 21-inch wheels with some serious ZR-rated Pirelli tires.

The Camaro Dale Earnhart Jr. Concept (whew, that's a mouthful!) features a prominent custom paint scheme that uses OEM colors in a unique way. Out back, we see the RS-series tail lamps making another appearance and a custom dual-exhaust peaking from under the ground effects kit's rear diffuser.

The interior is a blend of style and performance with custom-trimmed leather seats, steering wheel, shift knob, door armrests and center console lid, with accent stitching. Carbon-fiber treatment on the instrument panel and door panel inserts and racing-style aluminum pedals bring a performance edge.

Dale Jr. also specified Chevy Accessories' upgraded audio system for the Camaro, which is matched with a Boston Acoustics speaker system, including amps and subwoofers.
