Samsung Mondi hands-on photos

At CTIA 2009, CNET takes a hands-on look at Samsung's newest WiMax device, the Samsung Mondi.

Samsung Mondi

Along with the Samsung Instinct S30, Samsung announced the upcoming availability of its WiMax-enabled Samsung Mondi at CTIA 2009. The device is expected to ship in Q2 through Best Buy, Samsung, and Clearwire, but pricing was not revealed at this time.

Clearwire WiMax

The Mondi, which means "world" in Latin, is designed to work with the Clearwire mobile WiMax service from Clearwire. Currently, Clearwire's mobile WiMax service is available in Portland, Oregon and Baltimore, Maryland. The company expects to bring the service to more than 80 markets by 2010, including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Seattle.

Combination Netbook/laptop

The Samsung Mondi combines the features of a laptop and Netbook into a compact design. In addition to WiMax, the device offers 4GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS with with Route 66 navigation software. The Mondi runs Windows Mobile 6.1 and ships with the Opera Web browser, but there's no 3G voice.

Large touch screen

The face of the device is dominated by a 4.3-inch touch screen. The Mondi also has an HDMI TV out port.

QWERTY keyboard

You can push the Samsung Mondi's screen up to get to its full QWERTY keyboard. The handheld supports Outlook e-mail with direct push and POP3, IMAP, SMTP accounts.

A little hefty

While the Samsung Mondi could fit into a pocket, it'd have to be a big one, like a jacket pocket.

Multimedia features

The Samsung Mondi features a 3-megapixel camera/camcorder. It also has the capability to download and play movies.
