Upgrading the GoPro HD Hero2
We already know the GoPro HD Hero2. This nifty little camera features a waterproof, shock-resistant case that makes it great for capturing HD video in less-than-ideal conditions.
BacPac connection point
The HD Hero2 features a rear attachment point for adding additional modules, called BacPacs, that enhance the camera's functionality.
Remove rear door
To get started with the Wi-Fi BacPac, we must first remove the rear door by opening it fully and giving a firm tug.
Replacement doors
The Wi-Fi Combo Kit ships with two replacement doors: one sealed door that is waterproof and one ventilated door that improves audio recording in dry conditions.
Wi-Fi BacPac
The Wi-Fi BacPac is now ready to be installed.
Connections
Line the BacPac's plastic clip up with the left edge of the GoPro Hero and snap the metal connectors into place.
Wireless Hero
The Wi-Fi BacPac displays the status of its own internal battery and wireless connectivity on this slim LCD.
Charging
Users can power on the Wi-Fi BacPac independently of the HD Hero 2 -- a feature that comes in handy for remotely powering the camera on and off. Here on the side is where you'll find the power button and the Mini-USB charging point.
Additional thickness
Like all BacPacs in the GoPro system, the Wi-Fi BacPac adds bit of thickness to the already chunky GoPro camera.
Wi-Fi remote control
The Wi-Fi remote is also included in the Wi-Fi Combo Kit. This small controller enables the user to mirror nearly every function of the GoPro HD Hero from a distance.
Rear panel
The rear panel features a pair of slots that will come in handy later and a switch that releases the metal attachment key.
Mirrored display
The unit fits in the palm of my hand and, when powered up, features a small LCD that's identical to the monochrome display on the HD Hero2's face.
All linked up
Users are able to switch modes, change settings, start and stop recording, and monitor battery and storage levels all from the Wi-Fi remote.
Size comparison
With the included wrist strap, the remote can also be worn like a watch.
Removable attachment key
After removing the metal attachment key, the Wi-Fi remote can be connected to this proprietary charging cable.
USB charging
The charging cable can be attached to any powered USB port to recharge the remote's battery.
GoPro Wi-Fi Combo Kit
The GoPro Wi-Fi Combo Kit retails for $99.99. Eventually, GoPro will release smartphone and tablet apps to further boost the functionality of this hardware, adding the capability to live-stream to a selection of video-sharing services.
