Quad-core LG Optimus 4X HD also dresses to impress (photos)

At Mobile World Congress, LG shows off its new Optimus 4X HD. CNET goes hands on with this slim, attractive, and power Android smartphone.

Kent was a senior managing editor at CNET News. A veteran of CNET since 2003, he reviewed the first iPhone and worked in both the London and San Francisco offices. When not working, he's planning his next vacation, walking his dog or watching planes land at the airport (yes, really).

BARCELONA, Spain--LG offered an early peek at its new smartphones on the day before Mobile World Congress began. Though each handset was impressive in its own right, the 4X HD is arguably the most noteworthy of the pack. Not only does it come with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, but it's also powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. The candy bar design is pretty standard, though you can't miss the sharp 4.7-inch HD display. It offered great color resolution and slick graphics and animation.

In a unique and rather awesome move, LG added an indicator at the top-left corner of the 4X HD's display that shows how many cores of the processor are being used at a given time. So when you're just viewing the home screen, for example, only one core is running.

But switch to a graphics-heavy game and all four cores kick into action.

Ice Cream Sandwich definitely adds to the 4X HD's appeal.

LG promises that the 4X H's 2,140mAh battery (right) will be able to keep up with its processing prowess. We'll have to see how the company's promises hold up when we get a review unit. The 1,500mAh battery on the left is from the LG Optimus 2X.

The 4X HD has a trim design with few physical controls to ruin the clean lines.
