Pricing, availability

The 2014 Porsche 911 Targa 4 and 4S are scheduled to begin delivery to customers in the summer of 2014. The 911 Targa 4 will have an MSRP of $101,600. The more potent Targa 4S model will cost $116,200.

Wrap-around rear glass

At the touch of a button, the wrap-around rear glass panel lifts and rotates away from the chassis.

Fabric roof panel

While this is happening, the fabric roof panel disconnects from the windshield and begins to move backward.

Closing up

With the fabric roof tucked into the rear of the body, the glass pivots forward to its original position.

Targa roof bar

All done, the 911 Targa retains much of its coupe profile, while drawing attention to the distinctive metal Targa roof bar.

Going topless

The classic 911 Targa required the driver get out of the vehicle to remove its roof panel. The 2014 model can go topless in seconds.

911 Targa 4

There are no surprises in the engine bay (which is actually in the rear of the vehicle). The Targa 4 is powered by a 3.4-liter 6-cylinder engine outputting 350 hp.

Nought to 60...

With its optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox and Sport Chrono performance upgrade package, the 911 Targa 4 should hit 60 mph from a stop in just 4.6 seconds.

400 horsepower

The 911 Targa 4S' larger 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine boasts 400 horsepower and a top track speed of 182 mph when equipped with the PDK gearbox. Interestingly, the standard manual transmission nets the 911 Targa 4 and 4S one extra mph to the top track speed than the automatic.

911 Targa 4S acceleration

Zero to 60 mph in a PDK and Sport Chrono-equipped Targa 4S happens in just 4.2 seconds.

All-wheel drive

Both the Targa 4 and 4S are all-wheel drive models, with the same the wider rear track and body, and also Porsche Traction Management (PTM) software that are found in all 911 all-wheel-drive models.

Interior

The 911 Targa 4S should also be available with the full range of Porsche options and amenities.

To Targa, or to Cabriolet?

The 2014 911 Targa 4 and 4S join the Carrera Cabriolet 4 and 4S in Porsche's already extensive lineup, presumably to cater to those prospective 911 owners who want just a bit of nostalgia to go with their open air. I have to admit, the wrap-around rear glass is pretty cool looking.
