Palm is hoping to attract a wider segment of the market with the Treo 680, touting ease of use and an affordable price point. Cingular, the official carrier of the 680, will sell the 680 for $199.99 with a two-year contract and an unlimited data plan.
The Palm Treo 680 sports a sleeker and lighter design than Treos past, but it's not a drastic makeover.
...you will find volume up and down keys and a customizable shortcut button, which is set to launch the voice recorder by default.
The 680 is noticeably lighter than previous Treos, and it felt more comfortable to hold, with its curved and tapered edges.
The Treo 680 is easy to operate one-handed and features the standard assortment of shortcut keys and navigation controls.
It may not be the smallest smart phone, but the Treo 680 didn't weigh us down too much.
The Treo 680 uses the same multiconnector port that was first introduced on the Palm Tungsten 5. There's also a 2.5mm headset jack.
Something's missing here. Ahh, yes, the antenna has now been integrated into the 680, so you don't have that stubby appendage adding extra bulk to the smart phone.
The Treo 680 boasts a bright and sharp 320x320-pixel-resolution display. It's also a touch screen, which gives it an advantage over the BlackBerry Pearl, the Motorola Q, and the Samsung BlackJack by providing you with another method for navigating and entering data into the device.
The smart phone's QWERTY keyboard is a little cramped, so you might want to take it out for a test-drive. The Moto Q and the Samsung BlackJack definitely have the Treo beat in this category.
The Treo 680 is equipped with a lowly VGA camera, and it took some pretty horrid pictures. We think Palm could have at least included a megapixel lens.
The Treo 680 has 64MB of user-accessible memory, but you can increase this via the expansion slot, which accepts up to 2GB SD cards.
Though Cingular will sell only the graphite version, you can purchase an unlocked model ($399) of the crimson, copper, or arctic Treo 680 directly from Palm. And we've seen them in person; they're not as blinding as we originally thought.
