Photos: Old-school tech at SXSW

We visited the SXSW 2007 trade show, and then checked out how various artists use some old-school instruments to make modern electronic music and other cool tunes. CNET photographer Corinne Schulze got up close and personal.

Holy F*** shies away from modern electronic safeguards, such as laptops and software, but still manages to put out some awesome-sounding electronic music. Perhaps it as to do with this crazy array of keyboards and samplers?

A "keyboardist" from Holy F*** uses one of many of their old-school techy instruments to make some fun sounds. All of the band's live performances are totally off-the-cuff, and yet it was one of the best shows of the week.

Er, yeah, so we know this has little to do with music, but it's techy (and funny) nonetheless. We saw this dude wandering everywhere in downtown Austin.

The band No Age uses quite a collection of peddles to make their unique sounds. Who says music tech has to be modern to be sweet?

It doesn't get much more old-school than Legos. A sign made of the plastic bricks welcomed visitors to the convention center, and a massive pile of them rested in one corner for all to play with.

In addition to several drums and an array of keyboards, AA uses a sampler to lay down experimental music with tribal beats.

A "coloring corner" gave kids and others a place to relax during the show.

The Austin Convention Center is a lot smaller than the one in Las Vegas, but there's no less schlepping around, as the venues fan out around downtown.
