Photos: Maserati GranTurismo
Maserati launched its GranTurismo at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year. We had a little more opportunity to fawn over its fluid lines at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, so we took a few extra pictures. The name GranTurismo hearkens back to an original 1947 model, with the new one showing Maserati's vitality after 60 years.
The unique concave grille is another cue from the past, but this Maserati is thoroughly modern, using adaptive headlights that turn into corners. Its engine, a 400 horsepower 4.2-liter V-8, comes from Ferrari, and sends the car to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
Pininfarina designed the body, which is based on the Birdcage concept shown at previous years' auto shows. Until Ferrari bought Maserati, Pininfarina was barred from designing Maseratis due to an agreement worked out with Ferrari. The GranTurismo has a base price of $114,650.
Designed as a luxury grand tourer, the GranTurismo has four seats that offer a decent amount of room in back. Access to the rear seats is made easier by front seats that motor forward. The basic elements of the car--drivetrain and dashboard electronics--all come standard. Owners can option it up with a variety of coachwork choices that personalize the interior of the car.
The GranTurismo is well-equipped with cabin gadgets, including navigation and a Bose stereo. The stereo is a surround-sound system using 11 speakers and has a 30GB hard drive in the dash, which is used for maps and music storage.
The GranTurismo uses a six-speed automatic transmission designed to downshift appropriately during sport driving. It also has a manual gear selection mode, usable with the shifter or the wheel-mounted paddles.
