Photos: Honda FCX Clarity
Honda is driving the hydrogen highway forward with the release of its FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle. The four-door sedan features features a compact fuel cell stack and a lithium-ion battery pack, to drive the car with zero emissions. The Clarity will be produced in small numbers and leased to retail customers in 2008
The FCX Clarity takes much of its exterior design language from the FCX Concept, which Honda unveiled last year, including a swooping roofline and a short nose.
Being a hydrogen fuel cell car, the FCX Clarity has no need for traditional combustion-engine dials and gauges. Instead, it gets a colorful instrument arrangement to give drivers an indication of hydrogen consumption in real time.
To go with the advanced drive train tech, the FCX Clarity gets a generous helping of cabin gadgetry, including navigation system programmed with hydrogen-station locations, climate-controlled seats, and Bluetooth hands-free calling.
The Clarity FCX's fuel cell is longitudinally mounted in a tunnel that runs between the car's front seats. This enabled the designers to shorten the hood and maximize interior space.
The Clarity marks the production debut of Honda's Bio-Fabric, a plant-based material used for the car's seat coverings and door linings.
The Honda V Flow fuel cell assembly for the FCX Clarity is 65 percent smaller than the previous Honda fuel cell stack, and achieves an output of 100kW compared with 86kW from its predecessor.
