Photos: 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS
The Cayenne GTS handles better than any SUV we've tested before, and Porsche assures us it works great off-road, as well. The GTS is designed for better road performance than its siblings.
A little lower to the ground and a little more powerful than its siblings, the Cayenne GTS is the best handling SUV we've ever driven.
Porsche purists might consider this Porsche badge a little too high off the ground, but the Cayenne is Porsche's best-selling car, allowing the company to maintain a stable bottom line.
The 4.8-liter V-8 uses four camshafts and Porsche's Variocam variable valve timing, producing 405 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 369 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm.
The Cayenne GTS comes with an adjustable air suspension. In this picture, it is raised up for maximum ground clearance.
With all-wheel-drive, Porsche's performance-tuning, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, the Cayenne GTS exhibits excellent handling in hard corners, keeping roll to a minimum.
The Cayenne GTS can use its power for hauling instead of performance, and can be fitted with an optional towing kit.
The cabin provides comfortable seating for five, plus plenty of cargo area.
We weren't impressed with the plastic silver trim elements, but the seats and Alcantara roof are nice.
Porsche puts large stereo controls on the wheel hub, making it easy to adjust the volume, for example.
Porsche doesn't skimp on the gauges, including six in the Cayenne GTS, along with a center display for trip and other information.
This stick shift was a surprise in the Cayenne GTS. We weren't crazy about the long shifter, which isn't great for sport driving. An automatic is optional.
This head unit is an option called Porsche Communication Management. It includes navigation, a stereo, and phone. But the phone system only works in Europe, and the navigation system feels a few years old.
The interface uses the knob on the right for selecting menus, digits, and letters. It is a little tedious.
XM Satellite radio is an option with the Cayenne GTS, and uses the Porsche Communication Manager for its interface.
The single disc player in the Cayenne GTS can read MP3 CDs, and you can browse folders with the interface.
Our car came with the audio system upgrade, a Bose system featuring 14 speakers and a 410 watt amplifier.
The Porsche Communication Manager also shows trip information.
