Outlook.com for Android needs work (pictures)

We take a close look at the official Outlook.com app for Android. Warning: It's not pretty.

Jaymar Cabebe
Jaymar Cabebe covers mobile apps and Windows software for CNET. While he may be a former host of the Android Atlas Weekly podcast, he doesn't hate iOS or Mac. Jaymar has worked in online media since 2007.

Dark and dreary

Except for the logo up top, the Outlook app's home screen bears zero resemblance to its Web-based counterpart. And that's a shame, because Outlook.com is beautiful.

Multiple personalities

The Outlook.com app supports multiple e-mail accounts and makes it easy to toggle among them.

Sort of search

The big search search button on the main navigation bar only searches through your contacts. If you want to search through the text of your messages, you'll have to hit the Android search button. This doesn't make much sense.

Compose a message

The app's compose screen, with its Windows 2000-style buttons, looks nothing like the Outlook.com Web site.

Extra line of defense

One thing I like about the Outlook app is its PIN code option, which offers extra protection in case you lose your device.

Settings

The Outlook app does offer a nice set of notification and sync options, which makes it a usable app, so long as you don't mind the way it looks.
