Nokia N8

The Nokia N8 is the first Symbian 3 device and will ship at the end of September. Nokia is taking preorders online. The phone will cost $549 unlocked.

Hardware

The Nokia N8 features a 3.5-inch OLED touch screen that supports 16.9 million colors and a 640x360 pixel resolution. The handset itself measures 4.47 inches tall by 2.32 inches wide by 0.51 inch thick and weighs 4.76 ounces.

On the right, there's a volume rocker, a lock switch, and camera button.

Camera

The N8 comes equipped with a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash. The camera offers advanced camera options, such as face detection and HD video capture. There's also a front-facing camera for video calls.

Top view

The top of the device has a power button, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an HDMI port.

HDMI

Nokia gave us a demo of the HDMI output experience at Dolby office in New York.

Accessories

The Nokia N8 will ship with an HDMI cable. There's also a USB on-the-go adapter where you can connect a flash drive to the smartphone and view the contents.

Home screen panels

One of the new features of Symbian 3 is multiple home screens. You get three in total, all of which can be customized with different shortcuts and widgets.

One-click user interface

One of the most frustrating things about Symbian has been the clunky, inconsistent user interface. Currently, icons require one tap whereas list items need two taps. However, Symbian 3 aims to simplify things with a one-click user interface.

Multitasking

A new multitasking pane allows you to easily exit out of and switch between open apps.

Web browser

The N8's Web browser offers multitouch and Flash Lite 4 support.

Music player

The music player gets a facelift with a more modern, Coverflow-like user interface.

The N8 ships with a photo editor, which includes tools for adding text to images, cropping, red-eye reduction, and more.
