New pictures reveal more clues from 'Sherlock' Victorian special
Take a closer look at newly released BBC images of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Inspector Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, Mary Morstan and the potential bride herself, Emilia Ricoletti, from the January 1 special.
Bad weather brings bad tidings?
Over Thanksgiving weekend, the BBC released a treasure trove of promo images for "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride," a one-off 90-minute special set to air January 1.
Snow can't keep Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) and Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) off a case for long.
Holmes wears his iconic costume
The legendary Sherlock Holmes of the Victorian era wore a deerstalker hat, a trench coat and constantly smoked a pipe.
Dr. Dapper?
Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) may be a medical man, but this suit makes us think no one minded sitting in his waiting room to catch a glimpse of that manly mustache.
Meet the bride?
The Bride appears to be played by newcomer Natasha O'Keefe. On IMDb she's listed as the character Emilia Ricoletti. Does this make them one in the same?
Mary, Mary quite contrary
Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington) -- also known as Mrs. Watson -- may look like a fine lady who understands social protocol, but that doesn't mean she won't find some mischief to get into during the upcoming "Sherlock" special.
Lady of the house
Landlady of 221B Baker Street, Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs), seems just as frustrated with Sherlock's living habits in this special as she does in the modern-day series.
Lestrade is on the case
In the original stories, Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) not only often consults with Sherlock Holmes, he has the upmost respect for him.
"We're not jealous of you down at Scotland Yard. No, sir, we are proud of you, and if you come down to-morrow there's not a man, from the oldest inspector to the youngest constable, who wouldn't be glad to shake you by the hand," Lestrade tells Holmes in "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons."
The mustache returns
Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) wears a mustache that was popular in the Victorian era. His modern-day equivalent would be proud.
Holmes in his thinking chair
When working on a challenging case, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) can usually be found sitting in a chair, staring off into the distance, lost in his Mind Palace.
"I made me."
"What made you like this?" Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) asks Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the trailer.
"Oh Watson, nothing made me. I made me," Holmes answers.
Tweeds in a morgue?
Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) asks Holmes in the latest "Sherlock" trailer if wearing a tweed suit in the morgue might make him slightly overdressed.
The hat maketh the man
Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) proudly wears his bowler hat, which was popular among the working classes during the Victorian era.
A man of many hats
Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) might be best known for donning his deerstalker hat, but in the Victorian era more gentleman would be most likely sporting a top hat instead.
"We all have a past..."
"Ghosts, they're the shadows that define our every sunny day," Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) says in the trailer.
Those gentlemen

Behold the smoking jacket
If you're going to smoke a pipe like Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), you're going to need an elegant smoking jacket like this one. The jacket's purpose it to absorb pipe smoke and protect his clothing from falling ashes.
Violin music soothes the vexed mind
"Draw your chair up, and hand me my violin, for the only problem which we have still to solve is how to while away these bleak autumnal evenings," Sherlock Holmes once said in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes."
Sherlock arrives home unannounced
Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) scolds Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) for arriving home without properly warning her.
"I'm your landlady, not a plot device!"
In the original clip fans were treated to in July, we see Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) complaining to Watson about being underrepresented in Dr. Watson's written accounts of Holmes' adventures.
More than just a doctor
While Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) is highly-trained army doctor who can name all your bones as he's breaking them, he also becomes a great ally and friend to Sherlock Holmes.
Watson helps Holmes with another mystery
"Nothing clears up a case so much as stating it to another person," Sherlock Holmes once said in the original 1893 "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes."
The game is a hoof...
Since the special takes place in the Victorian era, Holmes and Watson travel via horse and buggy taxi, as we can see in this behind the scenes photo.
Taxi reflections
Just as in the modern-day "Sherlock," we see Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) pondering the mystery before them as his watches the buildings pass by in his taxi.
Three pipe problem?
Now that we can see Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) smoking, we wonder if he'll finally utter the words "It is quite a three pipe problem, and I beg that you won't speak to me for 50 minutes," as he did in the story "The Red-Headed League."
Time to solve a murder
In the modern-day "Sherlock" series, Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) uses his cell phone for quick information gathering. However in the Victorian era, he only has a trusted pocket watch.
Let the mystery unfold
"The stage is set, the curtain rises, we are ready to begin," Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) says in the trailer for "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride."
"Make no mistake, this is war."
"Every great cause has martyrs, every war has suicide missions," Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) says in the trailer.
Welcome to 221B Baker St.
In the sitting room in the lodgings of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, everything has a purpose from the microscope and magnifying glasses to his extensive reference library.
Take Sherlock's advice
"Fear is wisdom in the face of danger, it is nothing to be ashamed of," Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) says in the trailer.
"Now from the beginning..."
Whenever a client wishes to engage Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) to look into a case, they must always tell him the entire ordeal complete with all the facts first.
Tools of his trade
While Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) listens intently it's hard not to wonder what the glass containers in the foreground hold. Is it a chemistry experiment or the finest liquor?
The dynamic detecting duo
Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) make mystery solving look like fun.
