For Mother's Day, she needs a new TV

Sony's KDL-32R400A is the perfect bedroom or even kitchen TV, with decent picture quality and none of the frills she'll never use anyway.

If practicality is mom's main MO, Vizio's E series is the ticket. Yes, it has Smart TV and minimalist styling, and yes the picture is very good, but what she'll really love is the price. If this 2013 version proves hard to find, look for the 2014 "B" model numbers.

Mom doesn't know much about TVs, but she knows she wants a Samsung. Enter the UNF5000, one of the least-expensive examples of the brand, and one of the best values.

"M" could stand for Mom, especially if she's a practical lady who appreciates Vizio's value-driven ethos yet also wants something easy on the eyes--in terms of both picture quality and external appearance. The M series outdoes less-expensive Vizios with its styling chops.

Speaking of stylePerfect for the high-society woman with everything, Samsung's UNF8000 series is one of the most beautiful, sophisticated TVs ever made.

For the open-minded mom who doesn't mind a huge TV--heck, maybe she even demands one--there's Sony's KDL-R520A series, with great looks and a very good picture in 60- and 70-inch sizes.

Mom's a movie buff who'd rather relax and watch something eventful a huge screen than some lame TV show? BenQ's W1070 is a great value, and bright enough to not need a completely dark room.
