Apple's basic 13-inch white plastic MacBook remains very popular, and as it is rarely discounted. Mail-in rebates are not our favorite way to save money, but may be worth it if you can wait for the rebate to arrive. Best Buy's deal brings the cost down to $899, if you factor in the $100 Best Buy gift card. Apple's Black Friday sale will likely offer a price break of under $100, if that.

The enviable MacBook Air may be too new and too high-profile to garner any real discounts, but it's easy to find at about 4-percent off if you look around. We were pleased to see it discounted, if only slightly, at Amazon, which is usually pretty good with the free shipping options.
