McLaren 650S Coupe

Supercar builder McLaren adds a new model to its ranks with the debut of the 650S Coupe at the 2014 Geneva auto show. This new model slots in just above the MP4-12C, boasting better performance overall.

641 horsepower

The name 650S refers to the 650 PS output of the super coupe's twin-turbo V-8 engine. Converted to ponies, that's 641 horsepower. The S, obviously, stands for "sport."

Active aerodynamics

Though similarly styled to the MP4-12C, McLaren tells us that the 650S has been tweaked for improved aerodynamic downforce (up 24%) at speeds in excess of 150 mph. Active aerodynamics and the "airbrake" rear wing make a return appearance here, operating similarly to the active systems of the 12C and the P1 hypercar.

Dihedral doors

Those are no "lambo doors." McLaren calls the 650S' vestigial wings "dihedral doors," because they rotate on two axes when opening. Just aft of these people inputs are large intakes for the radiators that cool the mid-mounted engine.

Adjustable suspension

McLaren's ProActive Chassis Control (PCC) adaptive, adjustable suspension system makes a return appearance in the new 650S with enhancements.

Tech and interior

McLaren's release stresses that the 650S is not a "stripped out road racer." Though that center stack display only looks about as big as a Samsung Galaxy Note, standard equipment includes IRIS satellite navigation, Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming, premium audio, and voice controlled infotainment. Optional features include a rear view camera.

Geneva auto show debut

The 650S Coupe will debut in just a few weeks at the 2014 Geneva auto show. Later this year, it will be joined by a Spider variant with a power-retractable hardtop.
