Mazda at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show will introduce the CX-5, a small crossover vehicle that slots in below its CX-7 model. This crossover shows off a new vehicle platform, engine, and design theme for Mazda, all of which will heavily influence other models as they get updates.
The CX-5 is based on the Minagi concept shown at the Geneva auto show earlier this year. Mazda calls the exterior design language Kodo, which means "soul of motion" in English. This new design language replaces the Nagare theme seen throughout the last decade on Mazda concepts.
This interior shot hints at Mazda's future cabin electronics. The car is equipped with a center LCD mounted up high for navigation. A dial on the console is surrounded by buttons, most likely an interface controller. Dials to either side of the LCD look like typical radio controls.
Mazda uses its Skyactiv brand name to describe various types of fuel-saving technology. These include a chassis and body engineered to be lightweight, an automatic transmission with a lock-up clutch to reduce torque converter slip, and a direct-injection engine.
Mazda announced that the European version of the CX-5 will be available with either a direct-injection 2-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine or a 2.2-liter diesel engine. In the U.S., Mazda will likely only offer the gasoline engine.
