LG makes Ultra HD mainstream with new cheaper TVs (pictures)
LG has launched two new 4K 55- and 65-inch TVs that aim to bring down the cost of putting Ultra HD in your living room.
BERLIN -- LG is looking to make Ultra HD TVs more affordable with the new LA9650 series, two LED-lit LCD TVs unveiled here at the IFA tech show. This is the 65-inch model.
Editors' note: A previous version of this slideshow said that the new LG TVs had OLED screens, which is incorrect. They're LED TVs.
Here's the 55-inch model. Both have speakers mounted on either side of the screen, and like all of LG's Ultra HD TVs, have H.265 HEVC (high efficiency video coding), the successor to H.264. This lets you play back 4K Ultra HD video over USB.
This is the 65-inch LG LA9700. Unlike the cheaper LA9650, which has a fixed speaker grille, the LA9700 has a flexible "sliding speaker" that can slide down from behind the TV to blast you with its 4.1-channel, 50W noise.
Here's the 55-inch version of the LA9700. LG hasn't yet released prices or availability, but all these TVs will soon be on sale in Europe, then with slightly different model numbers elsewhere in the world.
Here's LG's 55EA9800 curved OLED TV, which we've seen previously. Now it's coming to Europe, bringing its bendy styling and 4.3mm thickness. It's certainly conspicuous.
LG's stand here at IFA is one of the more impressive. This huge 3D TV wall greets you as you walk in. For loads more from the show, check out CNET's IFA coverage.
