Lamborghini has unveiled the Veneno Roadster, an AU$4.67 million super sports car limited to just nine production models in 2014.
As part of its 50th anniversary year, Lamborghini has unveiled a beast of a prototype. Next year, the luxury supercar company will be launching on to the market one of its most exclusive models: the Veneno Roadster, a sports racer with an asking price of €3.3 million.
The sleek, carbon-fibre roadster follows the Veneno, unveiled in March and limited to a production run of just three cars. They're named after a famous Spanish fighting bull — the fierce beast that adorns Lamborghini's logo — to signify power, strength and vigour.
With its cutting lines and brilliant red body, the open-topped Veneno Roadster is a stunning embodiment of speed and audacity.
Like the Veneno before it, the Veneno Roadster makes extensive use of carbon fibre. All the car's exterior parts are made from carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP), as well as the monocoque, to make the car simultaneously lightweight and strong, bringing the weight to just 1490 kilograms.
A 12-cylinder engine with a displacement of 6.5 litres and fast-shifting ISR transmission powers the beast. It has a top output of 552kW (750hp), accelerates from 0kmph to 100kmph in just 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of 355kmph.
Although the vehicle doesn't have a roof, it is installed with a CFRP rollover bar in order to meet road safety standards. Lamborghini said, "The design is focused on optimum aerodynamics and stability through fast corners – with handling akin to that of a racing prototype. Yet it is fully road legal."
The car has been designed for aerodynamic efficiency, with a body that promotes optimum downforce and minimal drag. The front end works as a sort of aerodynamic wing, while the rear fenders optimise the aerodynamic flow. Meanwhile, the alloy wheels are ringed by a carbon fibre rim, which works like a turbine to deliver cooling air to the carbon-ceramic brake discs.
Inside, the car is also heavy on carbon fibre. Parts of the bucket seats, constructed of Lamborghini's patented Forged Composite, are clad in carbon-fibre CarbonSkin, which also lines the entirety of the cockpit.
The prototype car is painted a brilliant, vivid red — "Rosso Veneno", a shade developed especially for the Veneno Roadster. Each buyer, however, will be able to customise the car's colour to suit their tastes.
