Lamborghini Sesto Elemento (photos)
Lamborghini previously articulated a strategy of increasing the performance and fuel efficiency of its cars through lightweight technologies. The Sesto Elemento concept demonstrates how much weight loss can be achieved through the use of carbon composites.
Continuing in the style that it initially showed off with the Reventon, Lamborghini launches another devilish-looking concept car, this one called the Sesto Elemento. This car's carbon black exterior is punctuated with red design elements.

But the Sesto Elemento is more than just a design concept, it shows how Lamborghini can make more efficient cars through lighter materials. Where Porsche and other performance car makers are exploring hybrid power trains, Lamborghini is trying to lighten its models to maintain performance, but also lower emissions.

Based on the Gallardo platform, the Sesto Elemento's body and much of its structure is made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. Aluminum is used for much of the remaining metal. The result? A weight of only 2,200 pounds, which is extraordinarily light by modern car standards.

But even with that low weight, the Sesto Elemento is still powered by a 570 horsepower V-10. Lamborghini claims the car will accelerate to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds.

Here you can see that, instead of a glass engine cover, Lamborghini used carbon fiber as a further way to save weight.
The Sesto Elemento is only a concept, but it does show the direction new Lamborghini models will take.
