Kempler & Strauss W Phonewatch (photos)

At CTIA 2010 CNET takes a look at the W Phonewatch from Kempler & Strauss.

Kent German
Kent was a senior managing editor at CNET News. A veteran of CNET since 2003, he reviewed the first iPhone and worked in both the London and San Francisco offices. When not working, he's planning his next vacation, walking his dog or watching planes land at the airport (yes, really).

Kempler & Strauss W Phonewatch

On the last day of CTIA We stopped by the Kempler & Strauss booth to is new watch phone. The W Phonewatch isn't just a Bluetooth extension of your cell phone, it's a complete quad-band world phone. The unlocked device has a SIM card slot and a microSD card slot. Even with those features its face isn't larger thank a standard wristwatch. It measures 2.4 inches long by 1.7 inches wide by 0.70 inches thick and weighs 2.5 ounces.

It does have a speakerphone, but it's really designed to be used with the included Bluetooth headset.

The W Phonewatch is available now for $199

The Bluetooth headset design is unremarkable, though it's a bit large. One end is pointed to double as a stylus for the watch's touch screen.

The TFT display measures 1.5 inch and has a 128x128-pixel, 260,000-color resolution. The main menu has a simple icon-based design.

The secondary menu gives access to many of the phone's calling and organizational features.

Unfortunately, the W Phonewatch does not support voice dialing. If a contact isn't stored in the phone book, you can dial it by number. Promised talk time is 2.5 hours.

The Phonewatch also supports text messaging. The display is surprisingly responsive, though we suspect tapping out anything, but the shortest messages would be tedious. Also, the tiny text means that this is a not a device for the visually impaired.

The W Phonewatch even has an MP3 player. You'll need a microSD for storage, but you can use cards up to 2GB.

You also get a calendar. Yes, it's minuscule.

You even can play games.

The lens for the VGA camera is above the display near the wristband. The camera has a fair number of features and records video.

The W Phonewatch has a small speaker if you don't use the Bluetooth headset. We can't attest to its quality.

On the right side of the face you'll find volume controls and an End button.

The W Phonewatch also comes in white. We still wouldn't call it a looker.

And if you really want to go garish, the Phonewatch also comes in gold. It will be available in the third quarter of this year.
