Hyundai Veloster C3 Roll Top concept
Hyundai expands the functionality of the already flexible Veloster with the C3 Roll Top concept that debuted today at the 2012 LA Auto Show.
Fabric cloth roll top
The concept adds a sliding fabric panel to the Veloster's roof, which slides forward to create a sort of pickup truck bed or pushes back for open-air convertible driving.
Inspired by fixies
The C3 Roll Top is inspired by fixie bike culture and features a design that mirrors the bicycle stowed in its open hatch. Interestingly, a close look reveals that the bike is not a fixed-gear cycle, but instead a single-speed freewheel -- but let's not split hairs.
Tailgate, not hatchback
Rather than lifting up, the C3 Roll Top's design requires that the tailgate fold downward. Mounting points for the matching bicycle are built into the hatch, which is lined with reclaimed bits of broken skateboards.
Asymmetrical design
The Veloster retains its asymmetrical design with one long door on the driver's side and two shorter doors for the passengers.
Turbocharged engine
Under the hood is the same turbocharged engine that powers the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo that we've previously tested.
Mismatched wheels
Like the fixed-gear bikes that inspired it, the C3 Roll Top's front and rear wheels have been painted different colors.
Red contrast
The fabric roof, wing mirrors, and leather trim on the seats matches the bike's red leather saddle.
So much room for activities
The hatchback form factor was already remarkably flexible, but the addition of the folding tailgate and open storage area makes room to carry bikes or other large items, such as surfboards.
Would you drive it?
The C3 Roll Top is merely a concept, designed to draw attention to the Veloster, but the automaker has already taken some fairly large chances with this model and met with success. Perhaps we'll see a cloth-topped Veloster on the road someday soon?
