How to keep Alexa talking when she's off Wi-Fi
Using your phone's hotspot keeps Amazon Tap smart no matter where you are
Amazon Tap cuts the wire for Echo. But without Wi-Fi, Alexa stops working and Tap simply becomes a Bluetooth speaker. Here's how to keep Alexa talking off Wi-Fi, using your phone as a mobile hotspot.
First, open your Alexa app, go to Settings, select your Amazon Tap, and choose Update Wi-Fi.
Then, hold the bottom button on your Tap for 5 seconds.
When the lights on top turn blue, Tap will sync with Bluetooth devices. Instead, hold it till the lights turn Orange.
Once Tap is ready to sync, go to your phone's settings and look at its Wi-Fi connections.
Whether on an iOS or Android device, the Wi-Fi connection screen should look about the same. Connect to the Tap on this screen.
Back on the Alexa app, scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Use this device as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
A message will pop up telling you not to activate your hotspot yet. Just tap Start.
Next, enter the information for your phone's personal hotspot and tap Connect.
While Tap is searching for a signal, activate your device's mobile hotspot option. On an Android device, you can just tap the Hotspot option in settings.
On an iOS device, you'll have to Switch on the Personal Hotspot here.
Once Alexa connects to your device's signal, you can Tap Continue in the Alexa app. Now Tap is ready to chat no matter where you are.
