2016 Ford GT is the sexiest sheet metal in Detroit (pictures)

Ford is bringing the GT back from the dead one more time in 2016, and it's better looking than ever.

DETROIT -- This is it, the 2016 Ford GT!

The car won't be out until late next year, but we were given an early preview at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The styling is somewhat reminiscent of the original GT40, and the 2005 reboot, the original Ford GT.

The new Ford GT is said to be significantly lighter than before, thanks largely to more aluminum and carbon fiber in the body and chassis.

That body is also considerably more dramatically styled than before.

Massive intakes in the rear fenders provide cooling to the rear-mounted engine, and provide plenty of visual flair.

There's also a massive rear spoiler, which deploys at speed to provide additional stability and downforce.

The engine in the back is a twin-turbo V-6, 3.5 liters and generating more than 600 horsepower.

That replaces the supercharged V-8 engine in the previous GT, presumably providing better efficiency as well as more power.

Dual-exhaust routes outward high in the rear bodywork.

The V-6 is visible through the narrow rear window.

The car's spiritual predecessor was the '60s racer the GT40. Sadly, that branding is now owned by another company, so "GT" is what the new one will be called.

Plenty of exposed carbon fiber.

The twin nostrils in the hood are a strong throw back to the original.

The overall shape of the front of the car, too, is quite reminiscent of the GT40 and the earlier Ford GT.

But, the overall shape and design is far more striking.

No pricing yet on this, the 2016 Ford GT, but expect it to fall in line somewhere north of the $140,000 that the original GT cost in 2005.
