Flickr's new look

Flickr has an all new look this week, and one that's better for wider screens. Besides the facelift, it's also leaner--bringing an average page load that's 50 percent faster than before.

Come with us as we walk you through some of the new additions and tweaks from the old version.

Bigger is better

Photos are getting a 30 percent increase in size with the new version of the site, which is good news for people with wide-screen, or otherwise large monitors.

Geodata, and more

Geodata now has a much more prominent place on Flickr photo and video pages. The company has also moved things like views, comments, and the number of people who have favorited a photo or video up to the top.

The new drop-down menu

The new drop-down menu for "actions" puts most of Flickr's tools and options into one bucket with easy-to-eyeball icons. Many of these also open up as a pop-over, instead of in a separate page, as they did before, which lets you tweak something, then return to what you were looking at.

Caring is sharing

Like the actions drop-down menu, the one for sharing puts the e-mailing, blogging, and direct links for images in one menu.

Nested groups

Flickr has increased the number of surrounding photos you're able to see if it's in a group pool, photostream, or set. At the same time, it's hidden away the surrounding photos you might have seen from other groups until you click on them. This move saves space and has sped up load time.

Tag changes

Flickr has re-worked its photo tags feature, getting rid of the vertical list in place of a cluster to the right. The company has also gotten rid of the little globe icons, which served as a way to separate a particular tag from just that user--to that tag being used in everyone's photos. In its place are the same options, though now they only pop up when you hover.

The light box

The new light box feature is a cross between viewing a picture in full screen and Flickr's Adobe Flash-powered slideshow viewer. It can be summoned by hitting the new magnifying glass button (or just the photo itself), then dismissed by hitting the escape key.

The new sizes

The new size explorer has all the same functionality as the old one, but it has two "medium" sizes--one for the old Flickr at 500 pixels wide, and a slightly larger, 640 pixel-wide version for the new look.
