Fallout 4: Pip-Boy Edition unboxed (pictures)

Fallout 4 is here, just in time for the holiday shopping season. Of course, it's available in a over-the-top collector's edition.

This version is called the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition, and it includes the game, and a full-size replica of the series' famous Pip-Boy wearable computer.

Under the plastic overwrap is a box (also plastic) with two release latches on either side.

The top lifts up, exposing the contents. The box weighs 5.46 pounds, in case you were curious.

Inside, you'll see the actual game packaged on top of the Pip-Boy unit. Also, a large Made in China sticker.

In this small plastic case is the game disc and box, plus a few brochures and guides and a poster.

The game disc is inside a neat-looking metal case, along with some other promotional materials.

There's a small poster outlining the various "perks" you can earn in the game for your character.

Now we get to the good part, the Pip-Boy unit.

It's modeled on the wrist computers found in each of the Fallout games, which act as an in-game menu for options, inventory and settings.

Unlike the plastic Pip-Boy props we saw years ago for Fallout 3, this one is designed to allow you to insert a smartphone and use its touch screen. These rubber pads and bumpers help different phones to fit properly.

To insert your arm and/or phone, first find and open the metal latch.

The interior is padded, and includes a velcro strap for a tight fit.

A perfect fit! Although it seemed tight enough to not actually need the velcro strap.

Latch it back closed, and you're ready to fight some mutants.

This is a placeholder decal included with the Pip-Boy. You can remove it and replace it with your compatible phone (which sadly does not include larger phones such as the iPhone 6 Plus).

See? I'm finally using a wearable device!

To use your phone, you first have to download the Fallout 4 iOS, Android or Windows Phone app. It's not available yet, but it should be by the time the game launches on November 10.

For those times you don't feel like wearing a retro wrist computer in public, a handy display stand is also included.

Once you have the app on your phone and your phone in the Pip-Boy, you can use it for a second screen experience in the game, accessing the game's menus from your wrist.

The Pip-Boy is mostly plastic, but has a few nice metal accents.

There's some excellent retro detailing on the Pip-Boy, including lots of knobs.

I'm not sure what this white thing is for, but it sure looks important.
